This week all of Michigan and I'm sure every mom and dad of a athlete is morning the death of Wes Leonard. Wes Leonard was a Junior in high school in Fennville, Michigan. He was a star athlete for his school playing basketball and also the quarterback for the football team. On March 4th, Thursday he was playing basketball and the game went into overtime where Wes shot the winning basket to give the team a perfect season of 20 - 0. Everyone was celebrating when they noticed Wes was on the floor. He was transported to the hospital in Holland, MI where he died a hour later from cardiac arrest brought on by a enlarged heart. He was only 16.
I'm a mom of 4 boys that are athletes. I have one son who is a super star and plays very very hard. As a athlete we have to have him into the doctors for a physical every year we take him to the doctors for injuries. I'm sure this family did too. This story just brings tears to my eyes because this could be anyone. It happened at the high school my boys go to. I think it was in 2008 to a girl swimmer. She collapsed by the pool and died. Is there something we should be asking the doctor when we have our children in there to find there is a problem? I don't know. But I will be asking our doctor and I think everyone should next time you have your child there.
My prayers are with the Leonard family.
